Cycling North of Los Alcázares: San Pedro del Pinatar to Rebate

North of Los Alcázares, the riding around the Mar Menor begins to change. The waterfront roads through Los Narejos, Santiago de la Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar are predominantly flat, but turn inland and the route quickly becomes more varied.

This 46.5 km road loop from San Pedro del Pinatar combines the northern Mar Menor coast with San Miguel de Salinas, the hills around Rebate and the return through Pinar de Campoverde. It is an excellent example of cycling north of Los Alcázares when riders want more than a flat coastal spin.

Leaving the northern Mar Menor coast

The route begins near San Pedro del Pinatar, north of Santiago de la Ribera and Los Alcázares. The opening kilometres provide a relatively gentle introduction before the ride moves north through the coastal corridor around Pilar de la Horadada and Dehesa de Campoamor.

This flatter beginning is useful because the harder riding comes later. It also shows how quickly cyclists staying around the Mar Menor can connect the coast with the quieter roads of the southern Costa Blanca.

Climbing inland towards San Miguel de Salinas

After leaving the coast, the route turns inland towards San Miguel de Salinas. The elevation profile rises steadily rather than presenting one enormous climb, with a series of rolling efforts taking riders away from the resort developments and into more open countryside.

San Miguel provides a natural reference point on the loop. From here, the road continues west towards the Rebate area, where the landscape becomes more rural and the route feels considerably removed from the busy coastal strip.

The roads around Rebate

Rebate is the section that gives this ride its character. It is a particularly attractive part of the local road network, with changing gradients, open views and the quieter inland atmosphere that many visiting cyclists hope to find.

The highest part of the recorded route rises a little above 200 metres. That may not sound mountainous, but the repeated climbs and descents produce approximately 420 metres of ascent across a relatively compact 46.5 km loop.

Returning through Pinar de Campoverde

The return travels south through the Pinar de Campoverde area before dropping back towards San Pedro del Pinatar. This creates a genuine loop rather than simply retracing the outward journey and gives the second half a different visual character.

The descending trend towards the coast makes for an enjoyable finish, although riders should still keep something in reserve for the smaller rises shown on the elevation profile.

Is this a ride from Los Alcázares?

The recorded GPX starts near San Pedro del Pinatar, not Los Alcázares. We include it as part of cycling north of Los Alcázares because it demonstrates what becomes available once riders explore the northern Mar Menor area.

Customers staying in Los Alcázares can treat San Pedro as a separate starting point or ask OriMar Bikes for advice about building a longer day. Simply adding the coastal approach and return will increase the total distance substantially, so the complete ride should be planned rather than assumed to remain a 46.5 km loop.

Choosing the right bike

Riders should carry sufficient water, check wind direction and avoid underestimating the inland section during hotter weather. Conditions around the Mar Menor can make the opening and closing kilometres feel very different depending on the breeze.
